I had some experience with an Elta 4 in the early 1990's and I was not impressed. The instrument we had only applied compensation corrections to observations on side 1, no corrections were applied to side 2.

This caused problems with certain projects that required observations from side 1 & 2 to be averaged. The salesperson explained that it was not necessary to double angles with that instrument in that it was very accurate. Huh, really, how would you know, since trying to compare values observed was like comparing apples and oranges. It limited what projects we could use the instrument on. The traverses we used it on would not close as well as others with different brands of instruments. Soon, no one wanted to use it. I remember the Cheyenne Wyoming BLM Office got one back in 1977, but can't recall which model it was.

I remember that when I was there getting some data in order to stake an oil well in an unsurveyed township that they were really excited to get it, as it was able to be set to measure directly in chains and links. I doubt that now there are any of the people there that even used it. Dennis Bland and Jerry Messick were the ones that showed it to me and they are both retired now. I know that Dennis still lives in Cheyenne.
