The IICL's membership engages in leasing marine cargo containers and chassis to vessel operators and other organizations on a broad international basis. The Institute conducts activities by means of a Technology Committee and a Tax and Legal Committee comprised of representatives from member companies and through its staff at IICL headquarters. It is recognized as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), is active with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), World Customs Organization (WCO), and various other UN organizations. The education and training section offers two key components that include training and testing of individuals for all technical responsibilities of the industry. These programs offer the student the ability to start with the basics of inspection and repair for all equipment types and make them ready for the certification program of IICL. More than 3,700 container inspectors, in 69 countries, are currently certified by IICL, and more than 1,200 companies and company branches employ IICL certified container inspectors. Container Inspector Certification Examination: The IICL Container Inspector's Certification Examination is held once a year around the world in over 69 tests centers. No preparatory classes or courses are available from IICL; self-study is required.

The 2-1/2 hour Container Inspector's Examination (in English only) will consist of 100 multiple choice questions based the IICL guides and manuals listed in the Container Examination Information Bulletin. The certification is valid for five years, after which, an inspector must pass the exam again to become re-certified. The IICL has developed the Container Inspection Examination program to further promote important industry wide matters of proper inspection, repair, maintenance and operational issues. The exam, which is based upon various IICL manuals, allows the student to understand technical aspects and the complexities of maintaining and operating various equipment types. In preparing for the exam the applicant will be asked to study 7 IICL publications as well as technical bulletins 002 and 013 which is the bases for all questions contained in the exam. Chassis Inspector Certification Examination: The IICL Chassis Inspector's Certification Examination is held once a year in 20 test centers located in five countries. The certification is valid for five years, after which, an inspector must pass the exam again to become re-certified.

The IICL has developed the Chassis Inspection Examination program to further promote important industry wide matters of proper inspection, repair, maintenance and operational issues. The exam, which is based upon the chassis inspection and maintenance guide, 4th edition, allows the student to understand technical aspects and the complexities of maintaining and operating various equipment types. In preparing for the exam the applicant will be asked to study the IICL publication which is the bases for all questions contained in the exam. Individuals who pass the IICL chassis inspection examination will have a sound foundation for continuing their education in the chassis industry and allow them to move on to more specialized industry related issues. Container and Chassis Training Courses. Chassis Inspection Course: Students review in detail IICL's Guide for Container Chassis Inspection & Maintenance, Fourth Edition, which includes sections on types of chassis with accompanying photographs; inspection procedures; repair worthiness and typical damage and wear with accompanying photographs of chassis conditions; and inspection criteria for chassis, as well as sections on Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.

Vendor representatives who are experts in the specialized fields of brakes, tires and factory production give presentations that offer valuable, up-to-date product information. Vendor presentations are designed to give students the opportunity to ask questions and discuss and solve problems they face during daily operations. Dry Van Inspection Course: The objectives of this course include - Promote the understanding of the new IICL-6 inspection criteria. In addition, review applicable IICL manuals dealing with repair and proper inspection techniques; Review the latest industry issues relating to the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO); and View container repairs in progress and take part in an estimate writing exercise.
