Though Lexus launched the IS in 2000 as its entry-level rear-drive sedan, the first generation car is perhaps best known for a taillight design that placed separate red, amber, and white elements in a chrome body behind a clear plastic cover. This design took the name of the home market version of the IS – Altezza – and was soon adopted by the aftermarket as well as other car makers. Often referred to as Lexus's 3 Series, the IS was not a smashing success straight out of the box, selling at a rate only 20% that of the entry-level BMW. Versions were offered with one engine, a dual overhead cam 215-hp 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder from the Toyota Supra.
An automatic transmission was standard, though, in 2001, a five-speed manual gearbox was added to the list. The SportCross, a sport wagon, was added alongside the sedan that same year. Both models suffered from tight rear quarters that blunted their appeal.
When the second-generation IS debuted as a 2006 model, the SportCross and inline engine were gone, the wheelbase was 2.4-in longer, and the new 2.5-liter V6-powered base model could be ordered with rear- or all-wheel-drive and a five-speed manual gearbox. The 306-hp 3.5-liter V6-powered IS 300 had 102 more horsepower than the IS 250, but offered only rear-drive and a six -speed automatic transmission. Rear seat room was still tight, and the interior design was less 'Boy Racer' and more luxurious than that of the first generation car.
The second-generation car's 'L finesse' styling was based on a concept created by Leonardo Fioravanti, designer of the seminal Ferrari Daytona. Though this design language first launched on the mid-size Lexus GS sedan, it made a powerful impression on the IS by replacing the original's occasionally awkward and somewhat bland styling with a more coherent and flowing shape.

The biggest news, however, was the launch of the IS F in 2007. Powered by a 416-hp 5.0-liter V8, it is capable of 0 to 60 mph times of 4.3 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 170 mph.
Aimed at buyers of BMW's M3 sedan as well as Mercedes' C63 AMG, its flared fenders, prominent hood bulge, large cooling slots and wide wheels and tires promise menace while stretching the L finesse design language in new directions. One direction the IS never went before will be traveled in 2010 when Lexus introduces the IS 250 C and IS 350 C hardtop convertibles. These two-door models feature a three-piece folding aluminum hardtop that can raise or lower in 21 seconds.
As with the sedan, only the base engine will be offered with a manual transmission, though it is unclear whether or not all-wheel-drive will be offered on that version as well. A new IS should be ready for sale in the 2012-2013 timeframe.
