Ridgid 5700 Generator Manual

We have been without power for 164(!) days after hurricane Maria and this generator has been running for around 10 hours every single day! Many people in the area had all kinds of problems with their generators, small engine repair shops were overloaded, people tried to find a new generator which was difficult in the first weeks after the storm. I just went out every morning, gassed up the generator, pulled once and it was running. We only had two small problems during the five months+, one time the starter cord broke and the electrical switch broke. Replacing the cord was easy -the spring doesn't need to get out- and replacing the switch was a 10 minute job.

I changed the oil every 100 hours, put in a new spark plug and cleaned the air filter at 500 hours. Other than making the gas station owner rich (I burned around $2,200 worth of gas) no complaints. Highly recommended! Rated 5 out of 5 by RipD from Has worked great for me. Had this generator for about 2 years. So far it's worked great.

Gotten us through several power outages without an issue. Runs more than enough circuits in a large house that we get through power outages up to 20 hours with no problem. We could go days or weeks if needed. This generator starts on the first pull for me every time. It seems to have no issue provided power when needed.

Two heaters and central a/c in the summer are no problem. In retrospect I may have gotten the larger Ridgid generator just for the extra power.

But at the price for this one I could not be happier with what it does. I have no doubt the $4000 Honda is quieter and may provide marginally better power. $700 and this one does everything I need. Great generator at a good price. Rated 5 out of 5 by Frostbyte from Fantastic machine I bought one of these factory reconditioned from Home Depot.

I needed a spare generator for a detached building on my property and I was looking for a bargain. I found one in this generator. The recon is like new, it runs like a top, starts on the first pull every time and has enough power to run that building's full electrical system through the 240v 30 amp service outlet.

I'm a member of the local ham radio emergency communications system and a certified advanced NWS weather spotter. I needed emergency power for that building because among other things it's my radio shack.

There's a small (30 gal.) water heater, a mini-split heat pump, a refrigerator, extensive computer equipment and of course radio gear in that building. All of the lighting is low draw LED bulbs. This generator powers all of that with no problem. Its connected via the 240v port and powers a two phase service box in the building. Its no longer 'portable' as I took the wheels off and permanently installed it in my generator shack outside the building. It could become portable again if it need it to be but it's unlikely that will happen. I test everything once a month and run the generator during that test for at least half an hour.

So far there's been no problem nor any indication of a problem. I have every confidence that my generator is ready, willing and able to serve when it's needed. Ridgid builds great tools and this generator is no exception. I only have one complaint and it's not enough to ding a star off the review for. The output/load display does not work over the 240v port, this is noted in the manual and it's a designed-in engineering feature. The hour meter and such works but it won't display load information with the 240v port connected.

Being as I have other ways to check that it's not a real big deal to me but still it would be nice if the display panel on the generator showed that information when operating the 240v port only. Is there overload protection on the generator (alternator)? I'm not talking about protection for what's plugged into the generator, I want to know about protection for the generator itself. What are the symptoms of an overload condition? It's hard to precisely calculate the load on the machine, especially being as it's ONLY ever connected through the 240v four prong twist lock outlet. Which for some reason doesn't display the load/output information the other power ports do. I realize that display of the load on the 240v port isn't designed into this machine, I read the manual.

I can't imagine why the 240v can't be monitored the same as the 120v ports are but it isn't. So how do I tell if the machine is overloaded and is there any kind of protection for the machine against overloads?
