Refer to Figure 9 or Figure 10 when servicing the engine. CYLINDER REMOVAL. Remove the exhaust manifold as described under Engine Removal in this chapter. Remove the cylinder head as described under Cylinder Head Removal in this chapter. Evenly loosen the cylinder base nuts (Figue 11), working in a crisscross pattern. Remove the nuts.
NOTE: Before removing the cylinders, mark each cylinder so you can reinstall it in its original position and location on the crankcase studs. Slowly pull the cylinder up and away form the crankcase studs (A, Figure 12). Stuff a clean shop rag around the connecting rod to prevent dirt or parts from falling into the crankcase. Remove and discard the cylinder base gasket (B, Figure 12). Repeat the procedure for the remaining cylinders. PERIODIC LUBRICATION: DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Lubricate the drive shaft, bearing housing and coupling assembly (Figure 13) annually, or monthly if operating the craft in saltwater. The drive shaft coupling threads onto the engine crankshaft and transfers power to the drive shaft.

The coupling is internally splined and accepts the splines on one end of the drive shaft (Figure 14). The splines at the other end of the shaft fit into the jet pump impeller. Lubricate these splined components with marine-grade grease (part No.
2971066 or an equivalent) to prevent wear. The bearing housing supports the drive shaft and is fitted with a grease fitting (A, Figure 13). In order to grease the coupling and drive shaft splines, the jet pump must be removed. It is recommended that the jet pump be inspected and serviced whenever performing this lubrication procedure. Refer to Chapter Five for drive shaft and jet pump removal, lubrication and installation procedures.
